The Sophiatown Arts Akademy is an independent space for learning and playing. We are a spaceship. Our current base is in Brixton, Johannesburg, South Africa, but we manifest beyond this location we call our home. 

We claim the term 'akademy' back from institutions, because we believe in aesthetic  exchange among equals - whichever form it takes. 

Our curriculum works along our senses - seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and feeling. And our sixth one - for knowing intuitively, for sounding out, healing, and for listening deep. 

You can take part in a curriculum of six experiences per year; or just join the ones you like or need right now. We work on a community-based payment model. 

Our artist-in-residence programme allows us to work together with people who come to stay for some weeks or months to develop an idea, dream into the open, compose, paint - or finally get that writing done.
